Public Statement from Moxie Brawl

We are heartbroken.

Moxie Brawl creates joyous, important, powerful art by working with our wonderfully diverse disabled and queer artists, creative and production teams.

We stand for equity and the celebration of every body and identity. As a proudly inclusive dance theatre company, we make work with and for those whose voices are too often marginalised. We know that representation is not enough without justice.

We are devastated by the government’s recent cuts to disabled people’s benefits, and to the wider safety net that so many rely on. These decisions are cruel, calculated, and will cause immense harm. At the same time, we are appalled by the Supreme Court’s ruling denying trans women the right to be fully recognised for who they are. These moves are not neutral — they are acts of violence against already vulnerable communities.

To our disabled, trans, and marginalised communities: we see you, we honour you, and you are always welcome here. Our spaces, our stories, and our stages are for you.

As writer and visionary bell hooks once said:

“To be truly visionary we have to root our imagination in our concrete reality while simultaneously imagining possibilities beyond that reality.”

We root ourselves in the painful realities of now, while daring to build something more loving, more accessible, and more just.

And as activist and advocate Munroe Bergdorf reminds us:

“Equality is not in our reality yet, but it is in our vision. And if it’s in our vision, then we must keep pushing until it becomes our reality.”

We call on the government to wake up. To stop legislating harm. To listen, to learn, and to lead with humanity.

Moxie Brawl will continue to move, create, and resist — together.
